The Magnolia State is one of the worst when it comes to health care provision for a variety of reasons. The state blocked plans to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, which would have provided Medicaid coverage to an additional 300,000 Mississippians.
Furthermore, according to a 2017 study on health system performance by the Commonwealth Fund, Mississippi has the worst health system of any state. The state was also ranked incredibly low on the Mental Health State of America rankings (44) and as the absolute worst state for women’s health and well-beingby the Institute of Women’s Policy Research.
