Women’s rights activists celebrate Black Women Equal Pay day on Tuesday.
On average black women earn about 63 cents to every dollar earned by a white non-Hispanic man, meaning it takes them seven additional months to earn the same amount an average white man earns in a year.
But this issue isn’t unique to black women. Other women of color fare even worse. Latina women for example make about 54 cents for every dollar earned by a white man.
Chandra Childers is a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. She discussed the gender pay gap for black women with the host of the Takeaway Tanzina Vega.
