“Lilly Ledbetter: Pioneer, Leader, Icon, Mentor, and Friend”

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) on the Passing of an Equal Pay Champion

Washington, DC—The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) today joined millions in expressing its deep sadness at the passing of Lilly Ledbetter, a groundbreaking pioneer in the fight for women’s equal pay and a principled leader whose counsel was sought by local activists and US presidents alike.

“Lilly Ledbetter was not only an icon but also a dear friend and mentor to so many women leaders working in the pay equity movement,” said Dr. Jamila K. Taylor, president and CEO of IWPR. “Her life’s work reshaped the legal landscape for women and working families, and we owe her an immeasurable debt of gratitude for her tireless leadership. She was an inspiration to all of us, and I know her strength, determination, and unshakable dedication to fairness and justice in the workplace will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Dr. Taylor continued: “The team at IWPR was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Lilly directly on numerous occasions, and her insight and counsel have been invaluable to our mission. We will always honor her and do our best to carry her legacy forward in our ongoing efforts to ensure equal pay for all women.”

Best known for the landmark case that led to the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, Ms. Ledbetter’s courage in standing up against wage discrimination was instrumental in advancing women’s rights and ensuring that future generations would have legal protections in their fight for pay equity. Her leadership and activism have helped shape policies at all levels of government and across the larger global movement for gender equality.

“IWPR extends its deepest condolences to Ms. Ledbetter’s family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by her incredible legacy. And we stand in solidarity with all those honoring her life and commitment to equal pay and gender equity,” added Dr. Taylor.

The Institute for Women’s Policy Research strives to win economic equity for all women and eliminate barriers to their full participation in society. As a leading national think tank, IWPR builds evidence to shape policies that grow women’s power and influence, close inequality gaps, and improve the economic well-being of families.
