Connect for Success Initiative: Expanding Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Supports for Community College Students

In August 2023, IWPR launched the Connect for Success Initiative (CfS). This national research and learning initiative will study and expand sustainable partnerships and service delivery models to meet community college students’ sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs through grantmaking and a learning community. Through this initiative, IWPR will provide grant funding to grantees that have existing programs providing SRH care and support to community college students, especially those from underserved backgrounds.

About the National Initiative

The Connect for Success Initiative works across five pillars of SRH care to ensure community college students can access the necessary resources. The initiative seeks to learn the following:

  • Menstrual Care- How are organizations and community colleges addressing period poverty on their campus to increase access to safe, affordable menstrual care products
  • Contraceptive Care- How do students attending community colleges access contraception
  • Queer Inclusive Care- How are community college campuses creating inclusive spaces to meet the SRH needs of their student population who identify as queer
  • Abortion Care- How are students accessing abortion care should they need it
  • General Reproductive Care- How are community college students able to access and afford sexual and reproductive wellness needs met

Goals and Objectives

The goal of Connect for Success is to increase community college students’ access to high-quality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive care, information, and resources, and improve their ability to manage their reproductive lives and succeed in college.

IWPR intends to achieve these goals through the following objectives:

  • Develop a toolkit of effective SRH services and programs in community college settings that can be a catalyst for starting new and/or expanding existing programs.
  • Increase and strengthen partnerships across the community college and SRH sectors.
  • Build will among policymakers, advocates,  community college staff and faculty, administrators, and health and community stakeholders for integrating SRH services into student supports and increase their understanding of promising strategies for doing so.
  • Encourage, inspire, and inform new interest and investment from community college leaders, philanthropists, and policymakers in supporting SRH access as a lever for improving community college student educational and economic outcomes.
