To address those barriers, Chicago’s Generations College launched its Single Parent Scholarship program in 2020 after college leaders saw childcare becoming an increasingly common obstacle for student parents. Nearly two million undergraduate students in the U.S. are single mothers, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

Available to full-time, Pell Grant–eligible students who are single parents, the scholarship covers up to $3,500 per semester. To remain eligible, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
