Rowe-Finkbeiner: We are overjoyed to have Kate Bahn on from one of our favorite organizations, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, also known as IWPR.
And as Kate joins us, we are in a moment where there’s a lot of conversation — there should be more conversation — about what’s happening due to the restrictive, reductive, damaging, life-threatening abortion restrictions that MAGA and the Trump administration have been pushing through. And you have a new project, a new research project that talks about some of the actual costs from these abortion restrictions. …
Kate Bahn, IWPR: At IWPR, this is our fourth time releasing this update to the model, and what we are looking at in our model is a partial estimate of the cost to the wider economy from these abortion restrictions. And what we found is the states that ban abortions, and so those set of states that have really severe bans or restrictions to abortions, are costing the national economy 68 billion a year, alone. So just those subset of states. But then, when we look at all states, because there’s a variety of restrictions and protections across the country, the total cost to the national economy from restrictions to access to abortion is over $140 billion per year.
