The highlights:
  • Fourth best state for women: Hawai'i scores in the top ten on three composite indices, making it the fourth best state for women in the United States.
  • Best health and well-being for women: Hawai'i earns an A- on the composite health and well-being and ranks as best in the nation. Women's good health is probably related to its high levels of health insurance coverage: it has the highest percent of women with health insurance in the nation.
  • Third best reproductive rights: Hawai'i allows access to abortion without a waiting period for parental consent for minors, and Hawai'i's women have many other reproductive rights identified as important. It earned an A- and ranked third in the nation.

The problems:
  • Low voter registration and voter turnout: Despite Hawai'i's high ranking for women in elected office (7th), women's voting and voter registration rates rank quite low, at 49th and 50th in the nation. Hawai'i earned a C overall in the political participation composite index.
